l Drops 9’2’’ è il piccolo noserider presente nel catalogo Drops per il 2010. Abbiamo testato la tavola in un periodo di circa tre settimane con onde che andavano da 50 cm ad oltre 2 m. (Click on the Flag for the English version)
Introduzione
Lo shaper dichiara che i punti di forza del Volt 9’2’’ possono essere riassunti in notevoli caratteristiche di noseriding senza che esse vadano a svantaggio delle classiche doti di surfata.Come si è quindi comportata tale tavola durante i test? Diamo prima un’occhiata alle sue caratteristiche:
Shape
La prua è arrotondata e spessa, praticamente la più voluminosa che abbiamo mai riscontrato su tavole di dimensioni paragonabili. In confronto, la poppa, di tipo Square Tail, appare molto più piccola ma in realtà è in assoluto anch’essa piuttosto grande, con l’ovvio obiettivo di fornire una grande stabilità alla tavola.
Come ci attendevamo, date quelle che dovrebbero essere le caratteristiche della tavola, la linea scoop rocker è caratterizzata da una curva continua. Non aspettatevi, dunque, nose rocker e tail kick esagerati nel Volt.
I bordi sono piuttosto definiti nella sezione poppiera, più arrotondati intorno a metà lunghezza e neutri verso la prua.
Per quanto riguarda la carena del Volt, la sua caratteristica più saliente è il quasi esagerato monoconcavo presente sotto la sezione di prua
Costruzione e caratteristiche
A livello costruttivo, il Volt è caratterizzato da un livello qualitativo molto buono. La tavola è offerta in configurazione tri fin, con la pinna centrale US Box e le due laterali mini tuttle. Le pinne stesse sono realizzate in fibra di vetro compressa, anch’esse di buona qualità.
Sfortunatamente il Volt non è equipaggiato con maniglia incavata ma è presente una scassa TT per il SUP Sailing. Il pad in EVA da 3 mm è piuttosto buono, leggero ed in grado di assicurare un’ottima tenuta.
In acqua
In surfata il Volt 9’2’’ ha manifestato ottime caratteristiche con un solo piccolo problema nel takeoff. In onde molto ripide tale tavola tende infatti leggermente all’ingavonamento. Comunque, è sufficiente adattare il takeoff muovendo il peso un po’ più verso poppa esercitando una maggiore pressione con il piede posteriore per evitare il nose diving. Detto dell’unica nota vagamente negativa della tavola, che peraltro andava menzionata per completezza, veniamo alle tante caratteristiche positive del Volt stesso, iniziando dalle sue eccezionali doti di stabilità. Il Volt è così stabile, infatti, che brilla anche e soprattutto in condizioni choppy, tanto che è una delle migliori tavole adattabili alle condizioni europee finora testate. Di seguito un breve video girato durante la prrima test session del Volt.
La sua forza è ovviamente nel noseriding, cosa che renderà felici i SUPer provenienti dal longboarding. Tuttavia anche le doti di surfata sono buone, soprattutto per paddler pesanti. Indipendentemente dal peso del paddler, comunque, il Volt si percepisce sempre come estremamente controllabile negli archi, in virtù di una notevole tenuta senza perdita di velocità apprezzabile. Il passaggio rail to rail è buono, specialmente per paddler con peso superiore agli 85 Kg.. Eccellente è invece l'atitudine della tavola a prendere le onde. L’effetto Row, come ampiamente prevedibile, è moderato.
Conclusioni e verdetto
In conclusione, il Drops Volt 9’2’’ è una tavola eccellente capace di offrire performance eccezionali in quelle condizioni che sono tipiche degli spot europei. Si tratta di una SUP board destinata in primis a paddler pesanti ed esperti per le sue notevoli doti di noseriding e buone performance nel carving. Paddler principianti ed intermedi di peso da leggero a medio troveranno nel Volt una fantastica tavola allround con stabilità al momento non ancora riscontrata in nessuna SUB appartenente al suo range.
Definire la Drops Volt 9'2'' come la tavola perfetta per gli amanti del noseriding è riduttivo. Infatti è la tavola destinata al SUP Surfing più versatile finora testata. Come tale è altamente raccomandata ai SUPer di tutti i livelli e categorie di peso, in modo particolare ai paddler esperti più pesanti.

The Drops Volt 9’2’’ is the short noserider in the Drops 2010 range. We tested the board over more than three weeks. Waves were ranging from knee high to solid overheads.
Introduction
The shaper claims that the major selling points of the Drops Volt 9’2’’ can be summarized in great noseriding abilities coupled with a still good potential for tail maneuvers. How did the Volt perform in the real world? Let’s have a look at its features first.
Shape
Speaking of the Volt’s outline, the nose is rounded and actually huge, about the widest we’ve seen so far in a board in this range. By contrast, the square tail appears, streamlined even though it is actually large and meant to provide plenty of stability to the board.
As expected, given the board’s program, the scoop rocker line is characterized by a continuous curve, so you won’t find plenty of nose rocker and tail kick in this SUB.
The rails are quite hard in the tail section, rounded around the center of the board and neutral through the nose.
The main feature of the Volt’s bottom is apparently the huge monoconcave under the nose section.
Construction and features
The build quality of the board is very good. The Volt 9’2’’ features a thruster setup with a US Box central fin and two mini tuttles. The fins, made of compressed glass fiber, are on pair with the quality of the board. Unfortunately this SUB is not equipped with a built in handle but it does feature a TT box for SUP Sailing. The pad is quite good, light and grippy.
On the water
In the surf the Volt 9’2’’ showed a quite good behavior with just one glitch: in very steep waves it is prone to nose diving. However, it just takes a few takeoffs to get used to that, as it is sufficient to shift the body weight further towards the tail and push harder with the back foot to overcome this slight problem. Being the Volt an extremely stable board for light to heavy paddlers, it really shines in choppy conditions. In fact, it is one of the best boards suited to Euro conditions tested so far. Its noseriding capabilities are by far the best in its class but the Volt still performs well in the tail maneuvers. The Volt always feels grippy in the turns, holding speed throughout the carve. The rail to rail passage is good, particularly for the heavyweights. Not to mention, the Volt’s wave catching ability is excellent. The row effect, as expected, is in the moderate range.
Testing the Drops Volt
Conclusions and verdict
The Volt 9’2’’ is a very serious performer capable to deliver some of the best performance to date in euro conditions. It is a board targeted to the heavier, expert paddlers for its great noseriding abilities and good carving characteristics. Beginners to intermediate paddlers in the light to medium weight range will find the Volt a great all-rounder with unmatched stability in its class.
The Drops Volt 9'2'' is not just a great board for noseriders. In fact it is the most versatile SUP Surfing dedicated board tested to date. As such it comes highly recommended to paddlers of all level and weight, particularly to expert and heavier SUPers.
